A Conversation With Megan #3

Last month, I made pizza for supper with Megan, on her birthday. It’s always good cooking with my kids, but I can guarantee you that with Megan it’s always funny, too.

She loves helping chop veggies, grate cheese, and spread the sauce on the dough. Yes, it takes a little longer, but you know, the bonding and strengthening of ties that happens when you’re working together…you can’t put a price on that.

Besides, we always end up laughing. ;)

Me: Okay, let’s put the cheese on.

Megan: You know what? I love you!

Me: Oh Megan, I love you too!

Megan: Dis is the best birfday ever!

Me: I’m glad you liked it.

Megan: Dis birfday ROCKS! <fist pump>

I’m laughing too much to say anything. I seriously think we need a USB port in our heads, so we can videotape things we see. We’d have a flash drive in it, and when ready, upload it to our computers and to Facebook, of course. ;)

We move on to distributing the chicken to the pizza. We made my Buffalo Chicken Pizza (recipe is here on my cooking/food blog, The Magic Meal Fairy), so I had doused the chicken in hot sauce about 10 minutes earlier.

Me: Okay, let’s try to make sure we don’t leave any big empty spaces.

Megan: Okayyyy, mudder! <giggles>

Me: We’ll just use our hands like we did with the cheese.

We get all the chicken on the pizza and I wash my hand off, but Megan just wiped her hand with a towel.

Megan: My hand smells like buffalo chicken!

Me: Oh really? Do you have an urge to dip it in bleu cheese dressing?

Megan: Yes I do-oo!! <giggles>

We get the pizza into the oven and set the timer. I’m ready to go sit for a little bit, and as I turn to walk out of the kitchen:

Megan: On my next birfday, I’m gonna be 28! I want a new dollhouse. And some new people. And….

Yes, the usual ending to Megan’s birfday. ;)

A Lunch Out Alone

So Philip and I had a rare opportunity yesterday. Ryan and Timmy went off to school, Megan went to her Program, and we were alone. ALONE. As in, the children were not home, but we were. And though Caity did come home from work sometime after she got off at 8 this morning, she’s 24 and obviously doesn’t need our supervision.
As a matter of fact, she can supervise others…

So we arranged to go out for lunch and shopping, and she agreed to be available for Timmy when he got home from school at 3:30, so we could enjoy lunch and shopping at our leisure.

So we did.

And we didn’t just go to McDonald’s or Hardee’s or Wendy’s. Nope, we wanted a nice sit down meal. I wanted steak, since it’s been at least a year and a half since I’ve had it, and Phil was in the mood for some shrimp.

And my favorite place for tender steak is Applebee’s. So that is where we went. And we had THE best restaurant experience.

After much consideration, Phil and I decided to go with one of those 2 entrees for $20 deals that comes with either side salads or an appetizer to share.

We chose the appetizer, and got the boneless chicken wings with sweet spicy Asian sauce. It was delicious and good gravy marie, did that ever have a kick to it! I kept taking a sip of my ice water and letting it roll around on the tip of my tongue before swallowing!

Our waitress was super. We always get water just because it’s free, and for myself, the few times I’ve gotten a soda, I don’t usually finish it.  We hadn’t mentioned money, just that we rarely get a meal out like this, and we have kids, so we were trying to make the best choice.

I guess Courtney, our waitress, realized it was partly a money issue. So she said she wanted to buy us a soda, no charge to us! I didn’t get one because I really don’t drink soda much and have to be in the mood for it, but Phil took her up on it.

Phil got the double crunchy shrimp that came with fries, cole slaw, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce. He loves shrimp, and it was good. He gave me a shrimp and I gave him a bite of steak.

I had the steak, rare, and added on the parmesan shrimp for $1.99 more. My steak was tender and delicious. I asked for broccoli and the mashed potatoes. Okay, if we’re going to go out for a nice sit down meal, we’re going all out--I got butter and sour cream on the mashed potatoes!

When we were finished eating, Courtney came and got the bill for us, and asked Phil if he wanted a soda to go. He said yes, and she turned to me and said, “Would you like a tea or soda? I’ll take care of it, if you do.” So she got a diet Pepsi for me.

We had such a nice experience, and Courtney was just the best: very friendly, very patient when we could barely decide what we wanted, came often enough to check on us to make us feel she took her job seriously but not too much to be annoying, and talked with us about our kids and hers. She happened to mention that her husband is out of work, they have 3 kids, and Monday was their anniversary. They couldn’t afford to go out for it, but a friend bought them each a big slice of pizza from a place they like.

She was so likable and we appreciated how she went out of her way for us, we gave her a $10 tip. Maybe she and her husband will be able to get themselves a little something special. Even little things can make a difference and brighten up life. Phil and I know that very well. :)

Caity's Birthday 2015

So, my lovely daughter Caitlin had a birthday 2 days ago, on Sunday. I can’t believe she’s 24 already. Time sure flies amazingly fast!

We always take the birthday person out for lunch, as close to the birthday as possible, but it also depends on everyone’s schedule. Caity wanted to go to the Chinese buffet we like, so we went there the day before her birthday.

The actual day of her birthday, Caitlin was so tired because her job is working the night shift as an EMT, and she didn’t work the night before, but she has trouble sleeping at night on her days off. So she slept most of her birthday, and she had to go to work that night.

But before she left for work, we gave her the presents we had for her, and I captured this event in pictures.

Megan gave her a case with small Disney princess pictures to color with the mini markers that came with it. Even if we let Megan buy something, she always finds something in her stuff to give too.

She wrapped it in packing paper and sealed it--tight!--with a few miles of medical tape.

Caity wanted this, the season 1 set of Orange is the New Black television show. Obviously she was happy!

Next came a set of headphones for her gaming system, which she had been wanting.

Megan also gave some pictures from the set she had given Caity, already colored. She always gives the birthday person something she’s colored or drawn, and we expect it. ;)

The last present in the bag is a movie Caitlin had bought Megan back in 2013. On my birthday 3 months ago, Megan had wrapped it up and given it to me as a present. Then a week later, on Christmas, she wrapped it and gave it to Timmy! (Christmas 2014)

So you can see Caity was very amused when she unwrapped it and discovered what it was.

And of course, she had to do a rabbit ears pose with it. ;)  (The Rabbiteer)

A few minutes later, Caitlin left for her night shift, hopefully a little happier for the gifts and fun of her birthday.
